Rainbow of Hope

God put rainbows in the clouds so that each of us, in the dreariest and most dreaded moments, can see a possibility of hope – Maya Angelou

The UK has been in isolation for a few weeks now. I work for the ambulance service and so have been at work as usual, but have had a few rest days last week, which were dedicated to knitting and crochet.

I have loved seeing rainbows painted and drawn in the windows in the local area around me; and after being tagged in the comments section of a crochet rainbow on facebook, decided to make my own.

This pattern is essentially a circle, folded in half to make a semi circle, this means all the ends can be knotted together and hidden inside, so don’t require weaving in.

Take care, wash your hands and please stay inside (remember, you’re not stuck at home, you’re safe at home).

Rainbow of Hope Pattern

You will need:

  • Yarn in every colour of the rainbow (or pick other colours that you like)
  • The size of crochet hook recommended on the label of the yarn
  • A pom pom maker (or 2 equal sized doughnut shapes cut out of a cereal box)
  • A sewing needle

Abbreviations:

  • Dc- double crochet (please note English crochet terms are used)

Rainbow of Hope Pattern:

  • Start by making a magic adjustable ring
  • Round 1: Crochet 8 dc into the ring
  • Round 2:  2 dc into each dc
  • **Round 3: 1 dc in each dc
  • Round 4: *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * to end **
  • Repeat from ** to ** until you have reached the size of circle you want. Change yarn colour as often as you like, if you change each round it will make a smaller rainbow, and if you change after a few rounds it will make a larger rainbow
  • Fold the circle in half and sew it together along the curved edge, it will be more of a ‘c’ shape than a perfect semi-circle, don’t worry about this, it gives a perfect base to sew your pom poms on to
How the back will look when finished- a ‘c’ shape
  • Now you can make pompoms to add to the bottom, using whichever of the colours you want (I used them all). If you’re not confident in making pom poms theres lots of tutorials online, or you can buy some
  • Sew a pom pom onto each end of the rainbow
  • You can also thread some yarn or ribbon through in a loop at the top of the rainbow to allow it to be hung up, if you would like
